If you have ever passed through the South in late summer and wondered what those fields and fields of yellow meadow flowers are ... wonder no more! You've struck it rich... Goldenrod rich.
Goldenrod (Soldiago spp.) is a wispy perennial plant with fluffy yellow - gold flowering tops. Just like it's gold summer yellow friend, the sunflower, Goldenrod prefers open, sunny areas, hillsides and even wasteland.
In medical herbalism, Goldenrod is known to have "astringent" qualities. "Astringent" plants are beneficial for "drying up" or "tightening" leaky tissues. Weeping wounds and skin irritations can be soothed by topically applying a goldenrod poultice to the affected area.
Got a runny nose, wet chest congestion or other drippy symptoms from a cold, the flu or seasonal allergies? Taken as an internal tincture, Goldenrod can strengthen the integrity of mucous membranes in the chest, nose and throat.
You might be saying...now wait a minute! I thought Goldenrod made you sneeze during allergy season. Often confused with its look-a-like but sneeze - inducing "Ragweed" friend, Goldenrod is actually a valuable treatment for seasonal allergies.

Goldenrod is also an important pollinating source for many species of bees and butterflies.

Goldenrod has also been used effectively to treat kidney stones, bladder infections and other urinary tract issues. (Just look at the bright yellow flowers and think anything renal). "Renal" is a medical word that means pertaining to the kidneys or urinary tract. Goldenrod works as a gentle diuretic (something that helps eliminate excess water from the body) and also promotes a gentle sweating to help decrease a fever.
Isn't nature amazing - just by looking at a plant, you can sometimes get hints about what it may be used to treat. That's a whole 'nother herbal rabbit hole (a super cool one!) called the "Doctrine of Signatures". But let's save that for later. Back to pee. And yellow flowers. And sunny days. Stay with me... unless of course you have to take a bathroom break.

Hungry? All parts of Goldenrod are edible and make a bright addition to any salad, greens or side dish. Packed with beneficial flavanoids and anti-oxidants, Goldenrod has many benefits for the circulatory system (heart & blood vessels).
